A Clinical Analysis of Intussusception in Infants and Childrens


Abstract
1) On the age and sex distribution, the age under 1 year old was the most common and the peak incidence was from 4 to 9 months of age(50%). In sex distribution, male showed higher incidence than in female, with the ratio of 1.7 : 1(73 :42).
2) There were no greater differences in the incidence among the four seasons, but we could find out a little higher incidence summer(32%).
3) On the etiologic analysis, idiopathic type was most common(67%) following mesenteric lymphoid hyperplasia.
4) The duration from the symptoms to admission, 77% was within 24 hours, 12% was form 24 hours to 48 hours, 7% was from 48 hours to 72 hours, 4% was above 72 hours.
5) Frequent symptoms and signs were abdominal pain(84%), vomiting(71%), mucoid bloody stool(65%), palpable abdominal mass(39%) and abdominal distension(18%)
6) On the hematologic laboratory finding, 50% was revealed leukocytosis in serum above 10,000(§§). Leukocytosis and high body temperature was regarded as increased risk of surgical maneuver.
7) On the plain abdomen films, the common findings were gaseous distension of smal bowel 97 cases(84%), air-fluid level 42 cases(37%).
8) The most common anatomic type was ileocolic type(58%) and next was ileoileocolic type (14%).
9) The success rate of barium reduction was 69%. It markedly decreased in the cases arrived at hespital later than 48 hours after onset of symptoms.
10) The was no case of perforation during barium reduction.
11) In the method of operation; manual reduction(89%), intestinal resection911%).
12) Post-operative complications were present in 8 cases(22%) and there was no death among 36 patients who underwent operation.
13) Recurrence was 6 cases, 5 cases following barium reduction, and 1 cases after manual reduction.
